02 - How do I make a good decision?
Thu, Jan 18
In this session, we'll start looking at potential ethical frameworks to apply to the study of technology, for both tech use and the design process itself. In general, we'll learn that asking good questions is key to any exploration of the ethics of a situation.
We have three main in-class learning goals. By the end of lecture today you will:
- Have an understanding of consequentialist, non-consequentialist (duty), and agent-based (virtue) theories of ethics
- Understand the differences between ethics, morality, and the law
- See how ethical decisions are made daily, and how to weigh various goods against each other.
Slides for today's lecture can be found here.
